Signs your cylinder is on the way out
- Rusty or discoloured hot water while the cold runs clear. That's the inside of the cylinder, and it doesn't come back.
- Water pooling under or around the base. A cylinder leaking from the bottom is failing, not faulty — it can't be repaired.
- Hot water running out much faster than it used to, with nothing else in the house having changed.
- Banging, rumbling or kettling noises — usually sediment that's built up on the element or base.
- Constant drip from the relief valve. Sometimes just a valve, sometimes a pressure problem worth investigating.
- Age. Most electric storage cylinders are on borrowed time past twenty years. If yours is original to a 1970s or 1980s Christchurch home, plan the replacement rather than waiting for the flood.
Which system suits your house
Low pressure electric storage
What's in a lot of older Christchurch homes — a copper cylinder in a hallway cupboard with a header tank in the roof space. Cheap to replace like for like, but the flow rate is what it is, and it's why the shower drops away when someone runs a tap.
Mains pressure electric storage
The common upgrade. Full pressure at every outlet, much better shower performance, and it does away with the roof tank. It needs valve work and the right relief line, and not every old house is set up for it without some pipework — that's the part worth getting quoted properly.
Gas continuous flow
A wall-mounted unit that heats water only when you ask for it, so you don't pay to keep a tank hot and you don't run out. Works on both natural gas and LPG bottles. Frees up the cupboard the old cylinder was in, which in a small Christchurch bungalow is often reason enough on its own. Heat pump hot water
Uses a heat pump to heat the cylinder rather than an element, so running costs drop substantially. Higher up-front cost, needs somewhere sensible to sit with airflow, and performance drops in genuinely cold weather — worth thinking about on a Christchurch winter morning. What drives the price
There's no honest single number for a cylinder replacement, because most of the variation isn't the cylinder. What moves it:
- Like-for-like or an upgrade. Swapping a low pressure cylinder for the same thing is the cheapest job on this page. Converting to mains pressure or to gas is a different piece of work.
- Access. A cylinder in an open garage is straightforward. One in a tight hallway cupboard, up a level, or through a doorway it will not fit through is not.
- Condition of what it connects to. Old galvanised pipework, tired valves or non-compliant seismic restraint all need sorting while we're there.
- Size. Getting this right matters more than people expect — an undersized cylinder means cold showers, an oversized one means paying to heat water nobody uses.

Seismic restraint isn't optional here. Storage water heaters have to be properly restrained, and in Christchurch that's not a paperwork exercise. What installation day looks like
- We isolate and drain the old cylinder. Expect to be without hot water for a few hours — for a standard swap we're usually done the same day.
- Old unit out, new unit in and restrained, with new valves and any pipework the change requires.
- Fill, purge and pressure test, then check every outlet in the house rather than just the nearest tap.
- Set the thermostat correctly — hot enough to be safe from bacteria in the tank, tempered at the outlets so nobody gets scalded.
- Old cylinder taken away, site left clean, and the paperwork you need handed over. Gas installs get their gas safety certificate.
