Spouting, gutters and minor roof repairs in Christchurch

Overflowing spouting, a cracked joiner, a downpipe that has come away, or a small leak where the roof meets a flashing. We repair and replace plastic spouting and gutters, and carry out minor repairs on any roof.

What we do

  • Plastic spouting and gutter replacement. A full run, one elevation, or a single damaged length. Plastic (uPVC) spouting is what most Christchurch houses are fitted with, and replacing a tired run is usually a same-day job.
  • Plastic spouting and gutter repairs. Split or leaking joiners, cracked outlets, broken or missing brackets, and runs that have dropped and now hold water instead of carrying it to the downpipe.
  • Downpipes. Replaced, re-secured, re-routed or reconnected where one has come away from the wall, been damaged, or discharges somewhere it shouldn't.
  • Minor roof repairs, on any roof. Small leaks, lifted or loose fixings, flashings, boots and penetrations, and resealing around them — the sort of work that stops water getting in without needing the roof replaced.
  • Clearing. Blocked spouting and downpipes cleared out, with the cause identified rather than just the symptom. There is more on that on our blocked drains page.

Why spouting fails here

Leaf fall and roof silt. Christchurch has a lot of mature trees, and older roofs still shed fine grit. Both end up in the same place. A run that fills every autumn isn't failing — it's telling you it needs either clearing on a cycle or a leaf guard.

Age and UV. Plastic spouting has a long but finite life. Sun on the exposed face eventually makes it brittle, and the first sign is usually a joiner that has started to weep rather than the spouting itself splitting.

Lost fall. Spouting carries water because it runs on a slight gradient to the outlet. Brackets that have loosened, or a fascia that has moved, take that gradient away. Water then sits in the low point, weighs the run down, and the problem accelerates.

When a repair is enough, and when it isn't

A single cracked joiner, a broken bracket or one damaged length is a repair, and we'd rather do that than sell you a whole elevation you don't need. Where a run has gone brittle along its length, or the same section has been patched more than once, replacing the run is the cheaper answer over any sensible timeframe — and we'll tell you which one you're looking at before we start.

The same applies to the roof. A flashing that has lifted, a fixing that has backed out or a penetration that needs resealing is a straightforward fix. A roof that is failing across its area is a re-roof, and that is a roofer's job rather than ours.

Where this work stops

What we don't take on. Re-roofing and large-scale roof replacement is specialist work and belongs with a roofer. Continuous and metal spouting is a specialist installation as well — if that is what your place needs, we'll say so rather than fitting the wrong thing.

And as with drains: once a stormwater blockage is below the point where the downpipe enters the ground, it is in the buried line, and that needs a registered drainlayer with jetting and camera equipment.

What it costs

Spouting and roof work is charged at our standard rates — $135 + GST for the first hour including travel, then $95 + GST an hour, with materials on top. Most repairs are inside the first hour or two. For a full replacement run, ask for a quote: it costs nothing, and what we quote is what you pay. The full rate card is on the site.

Common questions

Do you replace plastic spouting and gutters?

Yes. We repair and replace plastic (uPVC) spouting, gutters and downpipes — a single damaged length, one elevation, or the whole run. Continuous and metal spouting is a specialist installation and not something we take on; if that is what your house needs, we will tell you.

Do you do roof repairs?

Minor ones, on any roof type — small leaks, lifted or loose fixings, flashings, boots and penetrations, and resealing around them. Re-roofing and large-scale roof replacement is a roofer's job rather than ours, and we will say so if that is what your roof actually needs.

My spouting overflows every time it rains. Is that a blockage or a fault?

It can be either, which is why it is worth looking rather than guessing. A run that is full of leaves and silt clears out. A run that has lost its fall, or has a cracked joiner or an undersized outlet, will keep overflowing no matter how often it is cleared. We will tell you which one you have and what it takes to fix it.

Can you fix a downpipe that has come away from the wall?

Yes. Downpipes pull away when the brackets or fixings let go, often after the run above has been carrying more weight than it should. We re-secure or replace it, and check why it happened — refixing a downpipe under a run that still holds water only buys you a season.

Is spouting and roof work covered by the 2-year guarantee?

Yes, on the same terms as the rest of our work — the guarantee covers our workmanship. It does not cover clearing out a blockage, or materials and components you supply yourself.

How much does it cost?

Standard rates apply: $135 + GST for the first hour including travel, then $95 + GST an hour, plus materials. Most repairs are done inside the first hour or two. For a replacement run, ask for a free quote and the quoted price is what you pay.
