Plumbing and gas services across East Christchurch

The east of the city took the brunt of the 2010 and 2011 earthquakes, and a lot of homes here have been repaired, re-levelled or rebuilt since. That history still shows up in the plumbing, along with the coast, which is hard on anything metal left outside.

Earthquake-repaired and re-levelled homes

  • Hidden leaks under the floor where pipework was stressed when the house moved or was re-levelled. Signs are a water meter that ticks over with everything off, damp floor coverings, or a higher water bill.
  • Waste pipes that have lost their fall, so sinks and showers drain slowly or gurgle. See blocked drains for what we clear, and where it becomes drainlaying work.
  • Mixed old and new pipework from repair jobs. We'll tell you what you've got and whether anything is worth replacing while we're there.

Coastal homes: New Brighton, Southshore, North Beach, Sumner

  • Salt air corrodes outdoor fittings: outside taps, gas regulators, pigtails and outdoor cylinder valves wear out faster near the sea. A yearly look costs far less than a failure.
  • Spouting and downpipes take a beating from wind and salt. See spouting and gutters.
  • Outdoor and gas hot water for homes where there's no room inside for a cylinder. See outdoor cylinders.

Established suburbs: Shirley, Burwood, Parklands, Linwood, Aranui

Plenty of everyday work: dripping taps, running toilets, tired hot water cylinders, and gas hobs and fires going into homes that have never had gas. Rentals are common through here too, and we can deal with tenants directly for landlords and property managers. See residential plumbing.

Common questions — East Christchurch

How do I know if my earthquake-repaired house has a hidden leak?

Turn off every tap and appliance that uses water and watch the water meter at the toby for a few minutes. If it's still moving, water is going somewhere. Other signs are damp or lifting floor coverings, a musty smell under the house, or a water bill that has crept up. We can trace the leak and repair it.

Do you charge extra to come to New Brighton or Parklands?

No. All of East Christchurch, from Woolston and Bromley out to New Brighton, Parklands and Sumner, is inside the Christchurch urban area, Zone 1. There's no travel surcharge and no callout fee, and quotes are free.

Why do outdoor taps and gas fittings fail faster near the beach?

Salt spray and wind corrode brass, steel and rubber parts much faster than inland. Outside taps, gas regulators, pigtails and outdoor cylinder valves are the usual casualties. Checking and replacing them before they fail is cheaper than an emergency callout.
