Residential plumbing in Christchurch

Homes, rentals and everything that goes wrong in them. One certifying plumber and gasfitter for the whole property, whether you live in it, let it out, or manage it for someone who does.

For homeowners

The everyday things — a tap that won't stop, a toilet that runs, a cylinder that's stopped keeping up, a gas hob that won't light cleanly. Plus the jobs you plan for: replacing a cylinder before it fails, putting in a filtered drinking tap, adding an outside tap, sorting out water pressure that's never been right.

You get the same person each time. That matters more than it sounds on a house you'll own for years — we already know your cylinder is in the hall cupboard, that the toby sticks, and that the previous owner ran PEX through half the place.

For landlords and property managers

Rental work has a different shape: tenants who need to be dealt with courteously, jobs that need doing without a week of back-and-forth, and paperwork that has to actually exist when someone asks for it.

  • We deal with the tenant directly if you'd rather not be the middleman. We'll arrange access, turn up when we said, and let you know what we found.
  • Gas safety certificates at $40 + GST, issued on the spot by a certifying gasfitter. The paperwork you need for a new appliance, a sale, or a tenant who's raised a concern.
  • Straight invoicing with enough detail that you can pass it on to an owner without translating it first.
  • Honest triage. If a tenant's reported fault is something they can sort in two minutes, we'll tell you that rather than charging a callout for it.

A note on Healthy Homes: the standards cover heating, insulation, ventilation, moisture ingress and draught stopping. Plumbing and gas work isn't directly part of that regime — but a gas heater that isn't safe, or a bathroom extractor that isn't ducted properly, will come up in the same conversation. We'll tell you plainly what's our work and what isn't.

What a Christchurch house tends to need

The housing stock here is unusual, and it shows up in the work:

  • Post-quake repair work left a lot of homes with mixed pipework and joins in places nobody documented. Pinhole leaks and unexplained pressure drops often trace back to it.
  • Low pressure cylinders are still common in older homes. They're not a fault, but they do explain the shower you've been unhappy with for a decade, and there are options.
  • Bottled LPG rather than reticulated gas across a lot of the city, which changes what appliances make sense and what a conversion involves.
  • Real winters. Exposed pipework in unheated subfloors and garages is worth lagging before July, not after.

What it costs

Common questions

Do you work with property managers and landlords?

Yes, regularly. We can arrange access with the tenant directly, report back on what we found, and invoice with enough detail to pass straight on to an owner. Gas safety certificates are $40 + GST and issued on the spot.

Do I need a gas certificate for my rental property?

A gas safety certificate is required when a gas appliance is newly installed or altered, and it's commonly requested at sale, at a change of tenancy, or where a tenant has raised a concern about an appliance. It's $40 + GST and issued by a certifying gasfitter.

Is plumbing part of the Healthy Homes standards?

Not directly — the standards cover heating, insulation, ventilation, moisture ingress and draught stopping. But gas heating appliances and bathroom or kitchen ventilation often come up in the same inspection, and both touch our work. We'll tell you clearly what falls to us and what doesn't.

Can you deal with the tenant instead of me?

Yes. Give us the contact details and we'll arrange access, do the work and report back to you. It saves a round of messages and usually gets the job done several days sooner.

My shower pressure has always been poor — can that be fixed?

Often, yes. In older Christchurch homes it's usually a low pressure cylinder feeding the hot side, which is a design rather than a fault. Options range from a pressure-balanced shower valve through to converting to a mains pressure cylinder or gas continuous flow. We'll look at what you have and give you the realistic choices and costs.
