Plumbing and gas services across North Christchurch
The north of the city is two quite different sets of houses. Papanui, Bishopdale, Casebrook and Harewood are mostly established family homes, a lot of them built from the 1950s to the 1970s. Redwood, Northwood, Belfast and the Styx are much newer, with whole streets built in the last twenty-odd years. The plumbing problems follow the age of the house.
Older homes: Papanui, Bishopdale, Casebrook, Harewood
- Galvanised steel pipe. Common in homes of this age, and it corrodes from the inside. The usual sign is pressure that has slowly dropped over the years, or rusty water after the taps have sat overnight. We replace it section by section or all at once, whichever makes sense for the house. See water and shower pressure.
- Low-pressure hot water cylinders. Many original cylinders are still in, or have been replaced like-for-like. Going to mains pressure, gas or a heat pump is a big improvement in the shower. See hot water cylinders.
- Gas hobs, fires and conversions in kitchens and lounges that were never built with gas. See gas hobs and fires.
Newer homes: Redwood, Northwood, Belfast, the Styx
- Mains-pressure systems with tempering and pressure-limiting valves that start to drip or fail after 10 to 15 years. A dripping overflow on the cylinder is usually one of these, and usually a straightforward repair.
- Plastic pipework that's quick to repair when it's accessible, and that we take care with when it's not.
- Gas continuous-flow hot water for families who are running out of hot water. See gas hot water.

Common questions — North Christchurch
Do you charge extra to come to Belfast or Northwood?
No. Belfast, Northwood, Redwood, Casebrook and the rest of North Christchurch are inside the Christchurch urban area, Zone 1. There's no travel surcharge and no callout fee: a standard weekday job is $135 + GST for the first hour including travel, then $95 + GST an hour. Quotes are free.
My water pressure has slowly got worse. Why?
In homes built from the 1950s to the 1970s, the most common cause is galvanised steel pipe corroding on the inside and narrowing the bore. Other causes are a failing pressure-reducing valve, a partly closed toby, or a low-pressure hot water system. We can test the pressure at the toby and at the taps to find out which it is before recommending any work.
Can you install gas in a house that has never had it?
Yes. Most homes in Christchurch run on LPG bottles. We install the bottles, regulator and pipework, fit the hob, fire or hot water unit, test it and issue the gas certificate for our own work.
